About the Physician Training Program

The training program of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians is of 6 years duration, which consists of 3 years basic, the College Written and Clinical Examinations and a minimum of 3 years advanced training. After completion of the entire six year training program, Fellowship of the College is awarded. Please note it is not possible to enter directly into advanced training.

Eligibility Criteria

This is an application to register as a basic physician trainee of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

This form is for use by doctors who:
  • have completed a medical degree;
  • have completed the internship year;
  • are employed in a level 3 teaching hospital, level 2 teaching hospital (or a level 1 teaching hospital – applicable to Adult Medicine only) in Australia accredited by the College for basic physician training. The Director of Physician Training (DPT) or Director of Paediatric Physician Training (DPPT) will be able to confirm if the post is suitable for training. If you wish to enquire about employment opportunities, you will need to contact the hospitals directly;
  • have already discussed their intention and proposed physician training with the Director of Physician Training (DPT) or Director of Paediatric Physician Training (DPPT) at the hospital.
Please note that the intern year cannot be counted towards basic physician training.

Application Process

Once you have secured a training position and spoken with the DPT or DPPT at the hospital, you should make an application to join the training program. You may wish to put aside 20 minutes to complete the form or you can save and return to it later.

Your DPT or DPPT within the accredited teaching hospital will be asked to verify the training rotations outlined are suitable for basic physician training. DPTs/DPPTs provide overall supervision for trainees and ensure the provision of a comprehensive program of clinical experience and formal teaching.

Closing Dates for Registration:

15 February 2008 (additional fees will apply to forms received after this date).

Applications received after 31 August 2008 will not be considered.
